A day in the life of a Lead Software Engineer in Switzerland
Designing and developing solutions
Briefly describe the organisation you work for
My organization (specifically my branch) works in diamond authentication.
What do you do?
I’m a software engineer designing & developing solutions for making the company’s products available to clients
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
Being a software engineer was on my scope of future employment opportunities since I was a child. I’m glad I pursued this career
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
Having worked in both larger companies and smaller ones, I can say that my current job is the closest I’ve found to what I was expecting from my university days.
Describe your most memorable day at work
There are multiple cases that one would deem memorable, nothing beats the first time a mistake you know it’s yours, has managed to reach production. For me that day was back in 2020 when I came to work only to discover that an critical issue had arisen to a client’s app (banking application) and the users were unable to do online payments.
Are there any challenges associated with your job?
In my current position deciding the architecture and generally the way that a software solution will work, is always a challenge. You never know how the actual product will end up and therefore you have to generalize the strengths of the software while making it easy to refactor.
What’s your work environment and culture like?
In my branch we’re just 8 people so the environment is generally relaxed (when there’s not much work to do)
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
I did not take any extracurricular activities and therefore I can’t answer this question
What would you like to do next with your career?
Stay right where I am.
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
Be flexible. Never have your sights on a single specification and don’t be afraid to explore new frameworks and languages.
What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?
Anything’s fair play
