A day in the life of a Assistant Location Manager (Film and HETV) in the United Kingdom
in the Location department, you'll find like minded and friendly people to go on the crazy journey of making a film together
Briefly describe the organisation you work for
I work on a contract basis for different Film and HETV productions currently being produced in the UK. Most recently, I've worked on Marvel Studios' Deadpool vs Wolverine, Loki Season 2, among many other projects
What do you do?
I am an Assistant Location Manager. This means I work closely with a Location Manager and locations to read the script, scout locations, and once the locations are decided, manage the logistics of getting a film crew there and getting the shoot done!
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
I worked for quite a few years after graduating in live comedy and theatre festivals as front of house, box office and then worked my way up to producing. I enjoy very fast paced environments, creative and logistical challenges and so when I 'fell' into locations, it felt like a natural fit!
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
No! In all honesty, I knew I wanted to work in the industry but I wasn't sure where...
Describe your most memorable day at work
Seeing Hugh Jackman on set in his original Wolverine costume!
Are there any challenges associated with your job?
Plenty - it's physically and mentally demanding, but the enjoyment when a shoot day goes smoothly is second to none!
What’s your work environment and culture like?
Busy busy busy - but in the Location department, you'll find like minded and friendly people to go on the crazy journey of making a film together
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
Boxing Club, although I'm not really allowed to use that one in my career...!
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
Use your networks! And don't be 'above' any job. You may want to be a director, but if emptying the bins is going to get you on set - do it!
What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?
Anything and everything on my job and how to break into the industry on the film and high-end TV side.
Is there anything else you’d like to tell us?
