A day in the life of a Researcher in the United Kingdom
Working a part-time job while pursuing my degree (full time) was inarguably the most valuable extracurricular I undertook.
Briefly describe the organisation you work for
A Leadership Consultancy that works with FTSE 250 C-Suite Executives (primarily IT and Digital functions). Core product offering includes executive search, diversity consultations, succession planning & lateral strategy, and market intelligence briefs.
What do you do?
I work within our Research function, supporting Consultants across the team on search mandates and market intelligence projects.
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
I decided that I did not want to pursue a career in teaching, then sought out additional qualifications in market intelligence (business analytics) while working as a Headhunter. Eventually I made the diagonal shift to Research.
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
Yes
Describe your most memorable day at work
Receiving absolutely glowing feedback from the CEO of a FTSE 100 retailer for a market intelligence report I built for the business. The client even went as far to say that he had never seen such a level of detailed, evidence-based analytics.
Are there any challenges associated with your job?
Workloads regularly exceed 50 hours per week.
What’s your work environment and culture like?
An intelligent, purpose-driven, and professional group of people. After a gruelling interview process, every team member feels that they truly have a purpose within the organisation and are reminded by senior management of where and how they add value.
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
Working a part-time job while pursuing my degree (full time) was inarguably the most valuable extracurricular I undertook. Additionally a summer internship. Both of these gave me the fundamental soft and hard skills of operating in businesses, and helped me to attribute real-world examples to my competency interviews as a graduate.
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
It's an extremely saturated job market, so while you are at York make the most of both the Careers Service, and as many extracurricular activities as possible. Working part-time is an exceptional way to build your credibility and this, paired with either a First or a 2:1, will demonstrate a level of tenacity that will differentiate you from other graduates. Furthermore, when the time comes to look for jobs, remember that not everyone goes straight into a graduate scheme. Looking at smaller companies that have shorter application stages, as well as greater flexibility in your role, could give you the chance to mould your role and career into what you want it to be.
