A day in the life of a Trainee Solicitor in the United Kingdom
I secured a training contract in my final year of my LLB and did my LPC as a masters at BPP in Manchester
Briefly describe the organisation you work for
I previously worked for a specialist family law firm in Manchester as a paralegal and am now a trainee a at full service London firm.
What do you do?
I have sat with the family team and i am currently working within the immigration department. I assist on a range of matters, drafting applications, undertaking legal research and prepare notes.
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
I chose to study Law purely because I found in interesting. When I decided I did want to persue a legal career I felt more suited to working for individuals than corprate work. I secured a training contract in my final year of my LLB and did my LPC as a masters at BPP in Manchester.
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
Practical law is very different to studying but it is as rewarding and challenging as I had hoped and expected.
Describe your most memorable day at work
I love it when I have a good number of tasks on my to do list. Its great to work through things and I have learnt so much. I also enjoy it when I accompany a client to court, to see our work come through and get them to the end of the process is rewarding and can be quite emotional.
Are there any challenges associated with your job?
There is lots to learn when you first start out and are very junior, I pick new things up everyday. Also due to the nature of the work no two days are ever the same - both the best and woret thing about the job!
What’s your work environment and culture like?
Having started my job in lockdown I have missed out on the office experience so far however everyone has gone the extra mile to make sure we feel part of the team and they try to ensure we have a good work-life balance.
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
I played Volleyball and was involved in the Law Society and the Eliminating Domestic Abuse Society. All of these involved teamwork and communication skills which are both crucial in my work.
What would you like to do next with your career?
I am looking forward to moving around the other departments as part of my training contract and at the moment hope to return to family law on qualification.
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
You will most likely face rejection. Don't let it stop you, reflect on your applications and interviews - they are all useful expeiences.

Enjoy it. A new chapter is exciting and scary just embrace it!
What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?
Anything- students who are not necessarily looking to go into corporate law as I remember feeling like everything was corporate focussed!
