Briefly describe the organisation you work for
Nestle Product Technology Centre is a state-of-the art facility, performing research and development of products and technologies for the confectionery industry worldwide.
What do you do?
I am the Quality specialist assigned to projects, and also the Food Safety advisor for the confectionery R&D.
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
I always wanted to work with applied sciences and research.
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
Yes. My colleagues went to perform research and teaching in universities, while I went to the industry.
Describe your most memorable day at work
The day that I saw my first product coming out of the line, ready for shipment. I picked up the box and had everyone in my team sign it. I still keep the carton as memory.
Are there any challenges associated with your job?
Nothing is easy. If the answer is easy, then it should have not been asked to this facility. The network of specialist from all over the world is gathered here to try and answer difficult questions, which may have never been asked before.
What’s your work environment and culture like?
Multi-cultural, multi-racial and multi-skilled. High end.
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
Languages, problem solving and food biochemistry.
What would you like to do next with your career?
So far I'm good where I am. I would like to help others to get a proper advice and help them get the direction they need. I know I could've used some guidance during my graduate years.
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
Have a plan, a proper plan with milestones. Not a dream. Be prepared to learn, and be prepared to acknowledge that you are wrong when needed.
