A day in the life of a International Relations Manager in the United Kingdom

I grew up abroad and although I stayed in York after graduation working in marketing, I worked in a variety of different roles and the thing I most enjoyed was building relationships and using my communication skills

Briefly describe the organisation you work for

International Student Recruitment at the University of Nottingham

What do you do?

I manage international student recruitment across a number of markets, including the Middle East and and Turkey. This involves overseas travel to represent and promote the University and to meet and advise prospective students on studying in the UK.

I also liaise with external partners such as schools, universities, agents and government organisations and sponsors.

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?

I grew up abroad and although I stayed in York after graduation working in Marketing, I worked in a variety of different roles and the thing I most enjoyed was building relationships and using my communication skills. When I found this job, it felt like a combination of all of these aspects.

Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

I originally wanted to go into publishing, but work experience during university made me realise this wasn't necessarily the path for me!

Describe your most memorable day at work

Getting to visit a giraffe sanctuary in Kenya after spending all day advising students on studying in the UK.

What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

Volunteering with a charity - this gave me more skills and experience than I imagined it would and led me into communications! This is something that is now vital in my current role.

What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?

Don't expect everything to work out as you think it will, and don't worry if you don't know what you want to do yet!
