A day in the life of a Accountancy Tutor in the United Kingdom

I qualified as an accountant with a big four firm on a graduate scheme and worked in audit before branching out into internal tutoring.

Briefly describe the organisation you work for

We work with private individuals and their employers to teach accountancy qualifications including as part of an apprenticeship scheme.

What do you do?

I teach accountancy course including AAT, ACA (ICAEW), ACCA and CIMA.

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?

I qualified as an accountant with a big four firm on a graduate scheme and worked in audit before branching out into internal tutoring. I decided to turn this passion into a full time role and here I am!

Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

I had no particular expectations when I studying, but history to accountancy isn’t necessarily a natural progression!

Describe your most memorable day at work

Any day when I hear of a student passing or perhaps finally understanding a difficult topic. Makes my day every time!

What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

I worked for the student cinema, YSC, and ended up chairing it which gave me such an insight into business and helped me really develop strong multitasking, time management and organisational skills which has helped me hugely with both the grad scheme and my current job.

What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?

Try not to be too picky! Most people will end up enjoying a whole range of roles, and you never know what a job is truest going to be like until you do it. So just dive into something and give it a go rather than aiming for the very specific thing that you think you’ll love.
