A day in the life of a Management consultant in the United Kingdom
We are given as much autonomy as possible and it helps build leadership and management skills from the first placement.
Briefly describe the organisation you work for
UK based insurance wing of Allianz SE, HQ based in Munich Germany.
What do you do?
Currently on the Graduate Management Trainee Scheme- placement programme going through Underwriting, Claims, operations and Sales/Marketing
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
It was evident that doing an Economics degree meant that using maths/stats in my day to day job was necessary. I was interested in Underwriting as this includes pricing decisions based on financial numbers for businesses. I chose a rotational scheme as there are many areas within the business and there is scope to stretch for secondments one any department.
I undertook the summer internship and received an offer for a full time graduate role upon graduation therefore was the right choice.
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
Not massively different. The financial services industry is very diverse and is not just based on Audit and Finance so wherever you start there is scope to use those transferable skills to reach anywhere
Describe your most memorable day at work
The day I realised how many responsibilities are given to someone even at a graduate level. After a few months in, there were large case management responsibilities handed to me, alongside a business project for a completely different division, which showed the diversity of the business and the opportunity to use networking. We are given as much autonomy as possible and it helps build leadership and management skills from the first placement.
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
-University of York Lacrosse Club : Playing with a team helped grow communication, leadership and networking skills. Alongside this, there was a big opportunity to learn about charity and how to fundraiser as this is a big part of all sports teams
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
- Keep an open mind: it is great to know exactly what you want to do early but if you don’t get plan A, have a plan B and keep an open mind in exploring all options.
- Try and obtain as many experiences as you can: try and get internships, taster days etc from first week at university. Try and talk to previous grads on LinkedIn to get tips and tricks on how to step foot into the industry, in the right way.
-Research: Research as much as possible to back your aspirations.
- Learn skills that will set you apart: E.g Learn to code, Do a coursera course, start a business etc - All of these will make your credentials stand out and prove yearning to learn
