A day in the life of a Professor of Theatre Training in the United Kingdom

Briefly describe the organisation you work for
I work in a research centre at a modern (post-1992) university.
What do you do?
I research theatre training, particularly around actor training, movement and the practice of physical theatre. I also supervise PhD students.
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
I started as a freelance actor, but found myself doing more and more teaching. I eventually got a job at a stage school and then at Coventry. I have been able to continue with theatre practice alongside my teaching and research. I studied at an international theatre school in Paris, which was a transformational experience.
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
I wanted to work in the theatre. Moving into teaching and research has been the same but different!
Describe your most memorable day at work
Getting my professorship was a wonderful day!
Are there any challenges associated with your job?
Finding funding for research is a challenge.
What’s your work environment and culture like?
I am location independent, with a number of spaces where I can hot desk. I can also work from home. I like the informality of my work - meetings and dress code are informal. I have control of my work/life balance. Occasionally I travel in the UK (and pre-Covid abroad) for conferences etc.
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
I was secretary for the Drama Society (1977-1978) - learnt to take minutes, how meetings work, and networked like fury!
What would you like to do next with your career?
Continue writing books - perhaps also for a wider readership. Also have more time again to make theatre.
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
Follow your passion and desires - be prepared to be flexible and adapt as you become aware of your real skills and find your own niche. Don't be afraid to take risks - I went to Paris in 1982 with no money and no contacts! If you don't take a chance when you are young, when will you do it.
