A day in the life of a Management Consultant in the United Kingdom
Briefly describe the organisation you work for
Vodafone, previously EY (Ernst and Young)
What do you do?
Management consulting projects
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
I wanted to get experience of many industries and business functions (marketing, finance etc), and management consulting is the classic option to keep your options open and use as a 'stepping stone'.
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
No
Describe your most memorable day at work
I did a project for the UK Government, related to Brexit, where I helped them set up new facilities at the borders for managing customs. I was the 'project manager' for the new facility, coordinating 100+ peoples activities to get the site ready for trucks to arrive. I had a very memorable day when the new facility opened.
Are there any challenges associated with your job?
At times can be:
- long hours
- imposter syndrome
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
I did a year abroad in my 2nd year at a University in California
I was the Treasurer of the York Entrepreneurs society
I was a member of the York Jewish society.
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
1) Learn how to describe and re-frame your studies / work experience to make them sound relevant to whatever job you're apply for
2) Learn how to manage your finances (ISAs, pensions, budgeting, investing)
3) If you want do apply for graduate schemes, understand the timings for these (you need to apply very soon after the application windows open to stand a good chance)
What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?
Anything at all
