A day in the life of a Charity Programme Coordinator in the United Kingdom
I am quite an empathetic person, so realised that working in the charity space would utilise my strengths.
Briefly describe the organisation you work for
I work for upReach, a social mobility charity supporting students from low socioeconomic backgrounds succeed at gaining top graduate roles, summer internships and spring weeks.
What do you do?
As a Programme Coordinator, I coach current undergraduate students to expand their soft skills such as confidence and self-awareness and build their technical skills needed for the industry they're looking to apply to. One day a week, I do a charity management rotation which has exposed me to charity project management, events, fundraising and communications.
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
I am quite an empathetic person, so realised that working in the charity space would utilise my strengths.
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
I was never sure.
Describe your most memorable day at work
Hosting a Launch Event for 85 students currently on the careers programme I run. Seeing students engage and grow was really fulfilling!
What’s your work environment and culture like?
Very friendly!
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
Volunteering at SolidariTee developed my communication skills by working alongside other student volunteers and creating social media material to raise awareness amongst others.
What would you like to do next with your career?
Work within the mental health space.
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
Get experience as early as possible. This could be in the form of volunteering or an official summer internship placement.
What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?
Anything.
