A day in the life of a PGCE English student in the United Kingdom

YSIS (York Students in Schools) and YSIS Plus helped to confirm my career choice

Briefly describe the organisation you work for

I am studying full-time at the University of Cambridge to become a secondary school English teacher

What do you do?

I attend lectures at the University and I also work in placement schools to build my knowledge of teaching and put that into practice

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?

Undertaking the YSIS (York Students in Schools) scheme and YSIS Plus scheme helped to confirm my career choice

Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

No, I have wanted to be a teacher since before my degree

Describe your most memorable day at work

So far probably starting the course and seeing how welcoming and supportive everyone is!

Are there any challenges associated with your job?

Time-management, student behaviour and organisational skills

What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

YSIS and YSIS Plus - learning confidence and organisational schemes
Student Ambassador work - working as a team and time management (as I had to fit my uni work around this)

What would you like to do next with your career?

Become a teacher

What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?

Be patient and don’t panic if you don’t know 100% what you want to do, it’ll happen with opportunities and experiences.

What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?

PGCE applications, jobs in education, student life, coursework anxiety and stress, managing workload
