A day in the life of a Automated Trading Capability Lead in the United Kingdom

Briefly describe the organisation you work for
I work for Shell Energy Trading, which trades Gas and Power.
What do you do?
I run the algorithmic trading platform. Our desk automates trading/execution on behalf of the Gas and Power traders leveraging algos.
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
I originally completed a BEng in Electronic Engineering at York, and then an MSc in Mathematical Finance. So much of my academic background is mathematical with work on programming and systems engineering. I had internships at Rolls-Royce and Societe Generale’s private bank Kleinwort Hambros and when graduating, joined Gazprom as a Quantitative Analyst for 2 years, working in their Trading, Pricing and Forecasting teams. I had a stint in investment banking, and then joined Shell as a Quant. Originally developing trading strategies in Gas and Power, and now running the Algo Trading Platform.
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
I originally intended to enter into investment banking or trading through a standard Global Markets grad scheme, but ended up getting a offer from Gazprom. I didn’t plan on joining the energy industry at all. But everything has been a natural progression to where I am now.
Describe your most memorable day at work
.
What’s your work environment and culture like?
It’s a high-performance environment and the team are smart and drive individuals.
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
As a student I played for the University Futsal team. Aside from looking good on my CV, and a topic of discussion, it was a great way to make some great friends and connections.
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
Dedicate your time to learn skills, not knowledge. Most employers in technical domains want a solid skill set acquired from academia and previous work, you can pick the rest up on the job.
Internships internships internships.
