A day in the life of a Freelance First Aid Trainer in the United Kingdom

I have always enjoyed training people in practical skills so after redundancy I decided to go and do something I really love.

Briefly describe the organisation you work for

I am self-employed.

What do you do?

I train people in First Aid and Mental Health First Aid.

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?

I have always enjoyed training people in practical skills so after redundancy I decided to go and do something I really love.

Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

Yes, but I have done a lot of other jobs in the meantime.

Describe your most memorable day at work

Every day is memorable.

Are there any challenges associated with your job?

The groups I teach are usually a mix of different skill levels so creating something that's interesting for everyone is a great challenge.

What’s your work environment and culture like?

It's a different group of people for every course and I enjoy hearing about their jobs and lives.

What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

I volunteered for Nightline and it made me a much better listener.

What would you like to do next with your career?

I'm happy just as I am. Career advancement can be overrated.

What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?

Build your networks. Don't be afraid to apply for jobs if you really want them. Talk to as many people as possible about what they do. Think about what transferrable skills you have.

What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?

Pretty much anything really.
