A day in the life of a Senior Project Officer, Monitoring and Evaluation in Turkey

Briefly describe the organisation you work for

to conduct all the processes related to the projects implemented by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Directorate for EU Affairs including procurement, contract signature and reimbursement for projects; to provide technical assistance to projects which are developed by governorates, special provincial administrations, municipalities, universities, professional organisations, non-governmental organisations and development agencies and approved by the Ministry.

What do you do?

responsible for providing technical assistance to grant beneficiaries to implement their projects in accordance with the EU-PRAG rules and national laws and regulations. Organising project related events and meetings such as kick-off meetings/closing meetings, consultation meetings, steering and management meetings with the attendance and/or under auspices of high-level ministerial representatives. Preparing training materials on project cycle management, proposal writing, EU-Turkey financial cooperation and upcoming calls for proposals.

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?

I studied International Relations when I was at collage then I did MA in European Studies. I started to work in Ministry of EU Affairs. Since I am a civil servant, I did take the exams to get the job.

Describe your most memorable day at work

When I successfully achieved the events that I worked a lot on, despite the challenges such as being moderator of the focus group meeting or making presentations.

Are there any challenges associated with your job?

Tight deadlines, catching the project results on timely manner, reporting

What’s your work environment and culture like?

As a civil servant, I work at the office between 9 am-6 pm. I should wear formal clothes. Since I am doing grant monitoring, I usually get visits from project beneficiaries. In addition to that, I deliver the training programmes to the local and central actors. I spend some of my time out of office space.

What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

I was a member of the many societies during my university life. Being a member of those societies helped me to socialise. Since I like travelling, I joined the school trips. I also worked as part time during my time at the university. I was following the job opportunities provided by the university such as university open days, room audits etc. In addition to that I was a collage representative.

What would you like to do next with your career?

I am looking for the job oppurtunities to develop my skills especially in international organisations.
