A day in the life of a Curator in the United States
Be flexible, be adaptable, and keep an open mind. You might be surprised by how great a fit a career in a different field is.
Briefly describe the organisation you work for
I work at Saint Kate - The Arts Hotel, a small boutique hotel owned by the Marcus Corporation (Marcus Hotels & Resorts). Saint Kate celebrates creative expression in its many forms, and provides a well-rounded guest experience between artist-designed rooms, artisanal American cuisine, and visual and performing art experiences.
What do you do?
As the Curator at an arts hotel, my job entails caring for the existing permanent collection, curating feature exhibitions in 5 rotating spaces, and engaging guests with the art by developing programming that highlights important aspects of the exhibitions and connects the public directly with the artists.
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
My passion for art, collaboration, and harnessing artistic talent in order to share it with others.
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
Absolutely
Describe your most memorable day at work
Giving art tours to both the staff and guests of the hotel as well as facilitating an artist panel in our blackbox theater.
Are there any challenges associated with your job?
Balancing my goals of maintaining a rapid pace at work with maintaining and growing my curatorial practice. This challenge is also what keeps me engaged in my job.
What’s your work environment and culture like?
Exciting, intense, collaborative, ever-changing.
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
MA Research Scholar at York Art Gallery.
Skills honed: curating, learning a different museum database, applying my dissertation research to curating a 19th-century specific exhibition
What would you like to do next with your career?
Continue developing curatorial, writing, and teaching practices.
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
Be flexible, be adaptable, and keep an open mind. You might be surprised by how great a fit a career in a different field is.
What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?
Art history, curating, research, work experience, 19th-century studies, my experience at York, pretty much anything
