A day in the life of a Staff Nurse in the United Kingdom
My first shift on the coronavirus ward would have to be one of my most memorable days. This was during my first year qualified I agreed to work a rotation to help support staffing on the Covid admissions ward.
Briefly describe the organisation you work for
I currently work within the NHS.
What do you do?
I am a Staff Nurse employed in Oncology and Hematology. Some of the main duties are supporting patients through their care; monitoring, and implementing treatment plans as well as educating patients and families. I am currently on a secondment working on a coronavirus ward. This is a busy admissions ward with a diverse range of medical and surgical patients.
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
The A Level options I chose were in hopes to gain an education which would assist me to move forward towards employment in the healthcare sector. I was a third year nursing student when the coronavirus pandemic began. I opted in to start a band 4 role in my third year of nursing on the ward that I am now employed on. This gave me insight and the opportunity to explore more responsibility before starting my band 5 role.
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
.No as I had experienced a placement on the ward that I am now employed on.
Describe your most memorable day at work

When the challenge arose I felt anxious and underprepared, but soon realized I was working with an amazing team and my previous nursing experience had equipped me for this.
Are there any challenges associated with your job?
Although an incredibly rewarding career there are many challenges. Healthcare can be a very stressful environment. Shifts can often be busy or demanding. Communication is key. It is important to find a good work/life balance and a strong support network also goes a long way.
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
As a nursing student it can be difficult to manage University, clinical placements and engage in extracurricular activities. Primarily I was involved in extracurricular within the Health Sciences department. I enjoyed open lectures expanding my knowledge on a range of topics. I enjoyed activities where there wasn't a big commitment to attend on specific days/times including self defense classes. If I had the opportunity again I would definitely get more involved.
What would you like to do next with your career?
Nursing is so diverse- there are so many options. Presently, I would like to gain more experience in the nursing workforce developing my confidence and general nursing skills. In the future I would be interested in undertaking further qualifications towards working within healthcare education supporting students in their journeys to become future nurses.
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
Be kind to yourself and try not to compare your nursing journey to others.
