A day in the life of a Operations Manager in the United Kingdom
Where I hope to be in 5 years
I aim to reach General Manager in 2 - 3 years.
My advice to students considering work
People are at the heart of any business. Your success will depend largely on your ability to capitalise on relationships and build networks.
What I do
I joined a new business stream in January 2010 set up to deliver internal and commercial training. I run the driver training division, offering a range of practical and classroom based courses. I developed and implemented the business model and review it on a cost basis. I manage a team of trainers, link back to the legal compliance team, leverage commercial opportunities, and negotiate contracts. My target is to deliver £300k profit in 2010.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Degree skills:
The depth of analysis and criticism required for my subjects has transferred well in a real world environment.
Extracurricular skills:
Overwhelmingly 'people skills'. Interacting with a diverse group of people, building relationships and utilising them. I developed these skills through part time work in hospitality and extensive independent travel I also developed a strong work ethic.
What I like most
I get a great deal of senior management exposure, autonomy and freedom in pursuing my ideas.
What I like least
Sales.
