A day in the life of a Access Officer in the United Kingdom
Where I hope to be in 5 years
I want to become a registrar of a university (I think!)
My advice to students considering work
Dip your toes in the water with jobs - try out interviews.
What I do
Access Officer: Outreach events - working in schools and colleges; organising study days and events; research and policy making; public speaking at major events such as open days; negotiating with fellows; assisting with interviews and admissions process.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Degree skills:
Public speaking, quality of written work. I often use my subject based knowledge to run academic enrichment events for potential applicants.
Extracurricular skills:
Student Ambassador Scheme by Undergraduate Admissions Office helped me with public speaking
Involvement with college JCRC and sabbatical as President of the SU - helped me develop skills in events organisation, negotiation, handling intense pressure and deadlines.
Volunteering with kids via Student Action developed child protection knowledge etc.
These things were really vital to getting my job! I could talk about it for ages!
What I like most
I enjoy the mix of activities. I really do love my job!
What I like least
What would I change? Nothing! I made it onto a graduate scheme and then decided it was not for me...I am glad I had the guts to make the decision that was right for me!
