A day in the life of a Architectural Investigator in the United Kingdom
Courses taken since graduation
Archaeology of Buildings, MA
Where I hope to be in 5 years
I'm currently on a fixed term contact and I'd like to be kept on full time if a job became available, eventually becoming a Senior Investigator.
My advice to students considering work
Undertake as much voluntary work as possible, it might not be paid but it will pay off in the long run.
What I do
Architectural Investigation is part of the Research Depertment and the bulk of our work involves researching and making site visits to properties which we then write up for publication - either as individual reports or as a book. This can involve a lot of time at archives as well as on site investigation, oral histories and comparative studies.
Skills I use and how I developed them
BA and MA, work experience with Oxford Archaeology, Essex County Council and Historic Royal Palaces.
Degree skills:
The ability to research and present information to others.
Extracurricular skills:
Reading, talking to others and visiting sites.
What I like most
The freedom we have to pursue lines of research.
What I like least
At present the buildings which I'm researching are ones which I would never have assumed I'd have an interest in - but it's part of any job to make your work interesting.
What would I change? I'd have spent more time learning everyone's names in the first few weeks - it sounds silly but I've been there too long to ask people now.
