My advice to students considering work
It's OK if you haven't quite figured out exactly what it is you want to do whilst in York. You'll have a better understanding of yourself after your first job.
What I do
I'm a research analyst at the central bank in the Philippines. I do economic research with a focus on economic and financial forecasting. My tasks require me to run econometric models to forecast inflation rates and other variables. To back up the numbers, I also have to look into the economic outlook of different sectors like the oil industry, agriculture sector, transportation, wages, and other factors that would affect the economic outlook, specifically inflation.
Skills I use and how I developed them
My undergraduate degree in economics.
Degree skills:
The skills I gained during my undergraduate course were really helpful in my job. I took Economics and Economic History which isn't as quantitative as other courses but my current job is heavy with math. So skills I picked up - my logical reasoning, being able to recognize patterns, and attention to detail helped me adjust. Furthermore, papers written for seminars helped me with technical writing and analysis. I was able to directly apply this to the economic reports I have to write.
What I like most
I was able to directly apply my undergraduate degree to my job.
What I like least
The tasks can be a bit repetitive but the nature really depends on the economic developments.
