Briefly describe the organisation you work for
I work for a business called H+H UK. This company produce aircrete, or AAC. This is a well known and highly popular building product.
What do you do?
I work as a Continuous Improvement Manager. My job is to deliver CI projects, and also look after the delivery of capital projects. The role is very varied and allows me to work cross functionally.
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
I was always interested in engineering, but it was not my first choice upon leaving school. I was given a fantastic opportunity at my previous employer… the rest is history!
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
I was already in work so unable to comment.
Describe your most memorable day at work
Oh there’s been many. Too many too list!
Are there any challenges associated with your job?
There are challenges every day, it’s all about how you front them and overcome them. From the task, to people to production struggling, to helping others deliver their improvements, to delivering complex capex projects.
What’s your work environment and culture like?
I work in an office, and I dress, intentionally, like I am in line with the factory workers. It is easy to balance work and home life,
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
I was a distance learner and therefore didn’t partake in any
What would you like to do next with your career?
I would like to continue progressing. The only way is up. Site or General Manager is my next goal.
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
Be committed, engaged and face the challenges. Above all, use common sense and think practically.
