A day in the life of a Test Engineer in Italy
Reading and caring about non-engineering subjects to become a "complete" person. You can be the best in your job, but if your knowledge stops there, you are giving a small contribution to the society and the company.
Briefly describe the organisation you work for
I used to work in Maserati in the Innovation lab where we were developing three different cars to the next launch: MC20, Grecale and Granturismo.
What do you do?
Originally the work was to test the specifications (written by Maserati system engineers) that were supposed to be implemented by suppliers of different electronic control units. To do so, requirements were read, test were written and performed on test-bench or directly cars. When an issue or bug was found, we reported directly to the supplier.
I did not love this job so I moved first (thanks to my boss) to the management of the test writing and execution dividing the work of the other testers.
I further moved forward using my pragmatism and problem solving skills. I started analyzing root cause of the issues in all the vehicle and report to the other departments or directly discussing with suppliers.
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
I am a Mechatronic engineer but what I was doing was more about electronic. I had to learn many new things which were interesting to complete my profile.
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
When you graduate, you have a huge knowledge of different fields and you expect to use them all. However, especially in big companies, they require less knowledge since they ask you to do a specific task. In a SME you could be asked to do more tasks of different kind. In general, at least of the Italian approach, we study rocket science of all subjects to then use basic tools or just repetitive works. This is not common everywhere, especially in England, where there is a more narrow specialization of the studies.
Describe your most memorable day at work
Everyday was special since I was driving a different Maserati everyday all around Italy. It was particularly memorable when I spent a week making trials and trying to find the root cause of a problem. I finally found it and presented it in front of suppliers and Maserati Heads of project giving a reasonable solution. None of these things were my tasks.
What’s your work environment and culture like?
My boss was 30 yo and we were a team of friends, where every week someone brought something to eat for the others. This was more than a working team, but supportive friends that contributed to make an efficient and happy environment.
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
Reading and caring about non-engineering subjects to become a "complete" person. You can be the best in your job, but if your knowledge stops there, you are giving a small contribution to the society and the company. I love doing trekking and sport in my amazing hometown. Many friends asked me to bring them there and it is not easy to create an adventure. Leading those people helped me to develop strong leadership in a friendly way.
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
Never underestimate yourself and worst of all don't "sell" yourself cheap. Instead of great theories, be pragmatic and show yourself proactive. Use common sense to do things and find the easy way to do it. Always show interest and curiosity, reflect on your and other peoples' experiences. Indeed, if you reflect on them, you need just one example to learn how to do it, if you don't reflect you would need to see the same thing multiple times. Take advantage of it.
