A day in the life of a Analyst - Investment Banking & Structured Finance in the United Arab Emirates
Working hours are not really fun, but it's a well compensated job
Briefly describe the organisation you work for
General trading activities, port to port transportation of commodities. Structure finance solutions for offshore investment clients via the DIFC investment vehicle.
What do you do?
Typical investment banking routine.
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
I am a big fan of Nassim Nicholas Talib. Figure that.
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
Yes definitely, I did an additional masters from WQU. Although I do model mining exploration contracts using option pricing principles (you take in multiple factor such as NPV, commodity prices, FX rates, etc.)
Describe your most memorable day at work
Everyday
Are there any challenges associated with your job?
Working hours are not really fun, but it's a well compensated job :)
What’s your work environment and culture like?
I got to office at 12 PM and leave at 5 PM. Most times I spend in meetings at other places.
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
My course was so heavy, I did not have time to do extracurricular. My weekends were spent hiking and traveling to either destinations in either Scotland or Wales.
What would you like to do next with your career?
My own startup, on which currently I am working as a side hustle. It is in quantitative finance field, so anyone interested can collaborate with me.
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
Job market is in a rut. Better network good, network as much as you can; be open to starting your own consulting firm; do not expect to get job offers by applying online; you gotta know someone inside for sure, either that or just sneak in the office building and hand your resume to them.
What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?
