A day in the life of a Property Management Services in the United Kingdom
Courses taken since graduation
Starting your own business
Where I hope to be in 5 years
There is plenty scope to expand the business but it involves significant re-structuring and longer term commitment. I would prefer to be doing this self employed work later in life so I am looking to start a career in the armed forces or police.
My advice to students considering work
Make the most of university life and the opportunities available to you. Try lots of different clubs and sports, meet lots different people and use the facilities available to you as much as possible - especially if it will help with your future plans. Most of all - enjoy it!
What I do
I set up as a business offering stress free property management services. I charge a monthly management fee per room I manage and for that I advertise the room, vet tenants, chase rent, sort out contracts and keep rooms in good order. I am also on call for emergencies and offer other management services such as property development, skilled/unskilled building work and property maintenance and HMO compliance.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Degree skills:
Health and safety awareness, information collecting skills have been useful.
Extracurricular skills:
Hands-on technical skills from learning from others and having a go, as well as book learning. Problem solving from experience and tackling problems I face. Book keeping from practice and necessity.
What I like most
Flexibility and satisfaction of completing various works.
What I like least
Taking on the stress of managing properties - emergencies and things going wrong and dealing with difficult tenants.
What would I change? I would have got my act together at a much younger age and decided what to do. Better preparation and development of basic but important skills.
