A day in the life of a People & Culture Group Assistant in the United Kingdom
Where I hope to be in 5 years
After another year or two gaining experience in my current role, I intend to move into overseas emergency response aid work, specialising in logistics and needs assessment.
My advice to students considering work
Think about relevant extracurricular activities to make your CV stand out.
What I do
Providing administrative and project support for the People and Culture Group as well as the wider organisation.
My responsibilities cover a range of areas; International travel and health; recruitment and induction; training; engagment and All Staff meetings; Team finance; internal communications.
Skills I use and how I developed them
My degree, experience of working in another international development NGO, fluent in French and I had international travel experience.
Degree skills:
Knowledge of HR & employment law, presentation skills and project managment.
Extracurricular skills:
I built knowledge of the sector and best practice through voluntary work and relevant training courses. I developed communication skills, knowledge, translation skills and advocacy skills by spending a year as a full time volunteer for Christian Aid. Prior to that, I moved to Strasbourg to learn French and gained further experience through translating.
What I like most
Every day is different and I can clearly see how my work is helping people living in extreme poverty.
What I like least
The workload can be extremely high.
What would I change? I would have undertaken a longer period volunteering overseas.
