A day in the life of a Assistant Editor in the United Kingdom
Courses taken since graduation
MA Print Journalism
Where I hope to be in 5 years
Progression to Deputy Editor after 1 year, and Editor after 2 while current Editor will move from Editor/Publisher to Publisher.
My advice to students considering work
Do what you really want to do and try for it from the start. Think carefully, take internships if you can to sample jobs, and really make the most of them - make the best impression you possibly can. The experience and the people you meet could be invaluable to you in future. Travel while you can, because it's very hard to go back! Try different routes if the obvious one doesn't work out.
What I do
I am half of the editorial team. My colleague and I split the editorial content, collaborating on ideas and execution of the work while taking hold of our own areas. I research and write longer articles on topics central to the theme of the particular issue of the magazine, write smaller pieces, commission writing, assist junior reporters (children aged up to 11), visit attractions, attend events and trade fairs, edit copy, brainstorm design, co-write a comic strip and blog as the characters on our website...basically help put together a magazine, which can involve all kinds of things! We have been known to spend Friday afternoons making crafts from the craft pages, so that we can take photos for the instructions.
Skills I use and how I developed them
MA Print Journalism.
Degree skills:
Ability to quickly digest and 'translate' scientific information into explanatory terms, understanding of biology and ecology, research skills, organisational ability.
Extracurricular skills:
Internship at The Ecologist and various newspapers placements developed confidence and knowledge of publishing and journalism.
What I like most
Being proud of the results of our labours, believing in what we are doing, learning a load of new things every day, and the relaxed office atmosphere.
What I like least
The uncertainty that comes with working for a small, brand new company.
What would I change? I'm quite happy in my job, found it fairly quickly and don't feel like I can't change direction at any time (money allowing), so, I suppose, I wouldn't change anything so far.
