A day in the life of a Assistant Accountant in the United Kingdom
Where I hope to be in 5 years
Once qualified as a chartered accountant, I would look to increase my IT role, then work up the ladder to manager, then partner.
My advice to students considering work
It is never too early to apply. Even if an employer doesn't advertise a summer job, apply for one anyway as one may still exist. Don't get sucked in by perks or starting salaries, as they might not last!
What I do
Very quickly get given a lot of responsibility and sometimes have to work long hours. Expected to be very organised. Jobs for individual clients can be expected to be completed in anything from about one to four weeks.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Degree skills:
General problem solving.
Extracurricular skills:
IT skills through my hobby of creating websites.
What I like most
Mixture of different types of clients keeps it interesting. Travel to the UK to work with clients.
What I like least
Long hours and reduced flexibility, particularly as a result of the recession.
What would I change? I would have tried harder at my degree to get a higher degree classification.
