A day in the life of a Teacher in the United Kingdom

How I found out about the job

Local/regional press

Courses taken since graduation

Primary PGCE

Where I hope to be in 5 years

I would like a permanent position teaching in a primary school.

My advice to students considering work

Get as much work experience as you can, and don't leave it until after leaving university. I was involved in YSIS and the millenium volunteers, both of which were crucial in getting on the PGCE and helping me decide on a career working with children.

What I do

Teaching year 1 (ages 5-6). Planning, preparing, teaching and assessing for a range of subjects.

Skills I use and how I developed them

PGCE and experience of working in the appropriate year group.

Degree skills:
Literacy, numeracy and ICT skills, team work, presentation skills, knowledge of child development.

Extracurricular skills:
Experience of working in schools and with children.

What I like most

Developing working relationships with children that help them make progress.

What I like least

Amount of unnecessary paper work.

What would I change? I would probably have considered other, less competitive areas of work before doing a PGCE as I feel 'cornered' into this area of work at a time when there are limited job opportunties.
