A day in the life of a Diplomat in the United Kingdom
Where I hope to be in 5 years
I've managed to get a place on the Diplomatic Fast Stream, meaning I'll be spending two years in London (in two separate roles) before heading off to my first 3-year posting to an Embassy or High Commission abroad. I hope to then progress through the organisation - there is no other job I would rather be doing more.
My advice to students considering work
What you do in your studies and outside of your studies does matter a great deal, and will be important. But most of all, enjoy yourself.
What I do
My job is really varied - there is lots of meeting people from across Whitehall and foreign officials from overseas or from Embassies in London. There are large amounts of information to take in and digest, which then needs to be reported in an effective way. Good mix of policy tasks (big picture, strategic thinking) and operational roles (actually doing stuff).
Skills I use and how I developed them
Degree skills:
Studying Economics, a course involving skills common to the arts and the sciences, was a real bonus. My job involves analysing large amounts of information and picking out the key points fast. Economics helped to train me to do this.
Extracurricular skills:
I became far more outgoing and sociable at York, which are vital skills for what I do. Being involved with my college, working as a STYC, and even presenting a URY radio show all helped to make me a more rounded person (although at the time it all just seemed like a laugh)!
What I like most
Working in a fascinating environment, with exceptional people, doing work of real importance. Lots of travelling, and the chance to live and work in a range of incredibly varied countries.
What I like least
Probably never going to be able to afford that Lamborghini!
What would I change? Not much. I would have liked to have gone travelling after leaving York, but I didn't have the cash.
