A day in the life of a Teacher of Mathematics in the United Kingdom
Courses taken since graduation
PGCE (secondary)
Where I hope to be in 5 years
I'm not sure yet what I hope to achieve but there are opportunities to progress to head of Key Stage 3, 4 or 5 before deputy in department and head of department. Alternatively I could choose to go down the pastoral route and become head of year.
My advice to students considering work
Don't worry if you don't know what to do staight away. I didn't have a clue what to do next so I took the first job I could and then spent time working out what to do next.
What I do
There is a lot of planning for each lesson involved. I prepare many of my own resources. I also spend a lot of time assessing students work when marking. Teaching itself can be very stressful. There are lots of targets and deadlines to meet all of the time. I also have pastoral duties because I have a year 7 tutor group.
Skills I use and how I developed them
PGCE
Degree skills:
I have very good subject knowledge - this helps me to teach maths effectively.
Extracurricular skills:
I can work well in lots of group situations. I developed these skills through participation in sports.
What I like most
There isn't time to get bored. It is satisfying when a lesson goes really well and all the effort put in to the planning and preparation pays off.
What I like least
Behaviour problems. This can be a huge unwanted stress.
