Microsoft Certified Technical Specialist - SQL Server 2005
Where I hope to be in 5 years
I am currently looking for a move back to the North East. I am feeling the need for a fresh challenge and to expand my skills beyond the current boundaries/restrictions of my current role. I still feel like I need someone to work with but my ultimate aim is to hopefully get into IT Management.
My advice to students considering work
Take a chance, if there is an opportunity to go work somewhere new, then consider it. It doesn't necessarily have to be a long term decision but it can be of great benefit and a good challenge. Overall, try and get into a job working for a company that interests you, as I see this is a key motivating factor.
What I do
I support business critical applications/systems, and daily business processes. It is my team's responsibility to troubleshoot/fix any of these jobs that fail. There is a proactive element in that the team is also responsible for analysing the way these jobs operate/perform, and to propose new solutions/ideas that can benefit the way the business operates (from an IT perspective at least). The team is also responsible for change management (approval/rejection/implementation). We also act as the technical resource on numerous business projects throughout the year.
Skills I use and how I developed them
The work placement year I did in my 3rd year was of great value.
Degree skills:
I studied a module that focused on SQL (that was useful with regards to at least having some grounding in a key area of my current job). I also completed 3 Finance modules during my degree (Corporate Finance in particular has been of benefit when considering the industry I am working in). General team work during uni modules has definitely been of use from a more social perspective. The general solid and wide ranging grounding that my course gave me in both IT and Management has been of great benefit as well.
What I like most
Initially it was the variety of tasks because a lot of it was new to me. I liked the culture of the organisation that really encouraged you to get stuck in to interesting, critical, and beneficial projects from the start.
What I like least
With the role you need to be very flexible with your working hours. It includes on-call support and weekend work. This can mean exceptionally busy periods. Working for a larger organisation does have its downsides.
What would I change? Nothing. I am very glad I got the opportunity to get into a job straight from uni. I have found the past 2 and a half years of great benefit, and I am now looking forward to the next step in my career.
