A day in the life of a English teacher in Hong Kong
Where I hope to be in 5 years
In five years' time, I hope to teach different levels of students, especially the senior form students.
My advice to students considering work
Plan ahead your career and send your CV and application letters back to your home town earlier so as to enhance your chance of being employed.
What I do
Full-time English teaching in a secondary school in Hong Kong. I teach 3 classes (100 students in total) - 1E (12-13 years old), 3C (14-16 years old) and 5AB (17-18 years old); and am a class teacher of class 3C. I am also responsible for organizing activities for a voluntary work group, an English-rich campus group, an English day group, English Society, and Yellow House in the school.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Degree skills:
I took an MA course in York. The MALLE course enabled me to immerse myself in an English speaking environment. I had contact with (pre-service) English teachers all around the world. Their ways of teaching English / their ESOL teaching experiences were varied and valuable.
Extracurricular skills:
The University of York provided me an opportunity to join the YSIS programme, which allowed me to be a student assistant in an UK primary school for 10 weeks. This experience enabled me to work with the UK primary teacher to take care of pupils. I learnt much from the teachers there.
What I like most
I enjoy working with different types of ESL learners and watching them progress every day.
What I like least
The administrative work; dealing with learners' discipline; chasing the students for their homework.
