A day in the life of a Legal Secretary in China
My career history
I have been working in my current position since I finished my Masters course in 2006.
Courses taken since graduation

Where I hope to be in 5 years
The work for a secretary is quite stable and fixed. In the future, I hope to be a highly qualified assistant by supporting the lawyers at a higher level, by then I will have more responsibilities and I can improve myself.
My advice to students considering work
I believe York students should fully understand their competitive advantages and positioning in the market, in order to get a job that is really suitable to them. Moreover, communication skills are very important in the workplace nowadays, whether you work in sales or not, you always have to promote or market something to your clients or managers.
What I do
As a legal secretary in an international law firm, I have to provide support to the lawyers, with job duties ranging from working on secretarial works to preparing documentation. Because I have to handle legal documents, I have to pay extra care and attention to maintain a high quality of work.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Degree skills:
My dissertation was about how the women at work strike a work-life balance, and it has inspired me to achieve this at my workplace. Currently I enjoy stable working hours, and I can have my own time on weekends and annual leave.
What I like most
The working environment is very stable and I do not have to travel around.
What I like least
Secretarial work is usually quite repetitive. However, when you can handle a new project, you can learn something new and this appeals to me.
What would I change? I enjoy working in a supporting role, and I would like to work in other well-established international businesses, in whichever industry.
