A day in the life of a Chartered Occupational Psychologist in the United Kingdom

How I found out about the job

Set up own business

My career history

Hewitt Associates 2000-2002 - St Albans UK - People Value Management Consultant (HR Consultant);
National Policing Improvement Agency (2002-2007) Harrogate UK - Chartered Occupational Psychologist.

Courses taken since graduation

MSc Industrial Psychology

Where I hope to be in 5 years

I want to carry on running my own company - in time I would like to expand my service offerings to involve coaching and perhaps form more of a brand with other associates.

My advice to students considering work

Be proactive in terms of seeking relevant and appropriate skills & experience. As someone who is involved in graduate recruitment - the market place is so competitive - employers are asking for more and CVs/applications really need to stand out.

What I do

Independent Chartered Occupational Psychologist within the assessment and selection arena, working with public/private sector clients on varied projects at all levels (entry through to Board level) including; job analysis/evaluation, competency framework design, assessment centre design/ delivery/test administration (volume/non-volume events), assessor training design/delivery and assessment/selection/recruitment advisor, advising clients on products, services and solutions. Responsible for my own business and personal development (eg product knowledge) and marketing activities, including regular client meetings. My work encompasses end to end recruitment, as well as utilizing recruitment technology and keeping up to date with changes in employment law relevant to recruitment.

Skills I use and how I developed them

I have qualifications in a number of Psychometric tools and an MSc in Industrial Psychology as well as becoming Chartered.

Degree skills:
It gave me a good understanding of human behaviour and why people do things.

Extracurricular skills:
I did some volunteer work with a special school that helped to develop me and understand the world of work - I also think that the friendships and associations I developed at York again helped me network and promote my business.

What I like most

I enjoy the variety of my work and exposure to different industries/people.

What I like least

Travelling and long hours.

What would I change? I would have got some more private sector experience.
