A day in the life of a Academy Events Recruitment Consultant in the United Kingdom
My career history
I was employed by Next in Leigh until July 2010, then started at FDM in Manchester as a Receptionist in September 2010 and moved across to the Events team in January 2011.
My advice to students considering work
Use the Careers Service! I didn't and now, through actually working alongside the careers services, I realise how valuable they are. Ask for support when you have interviews or assessment centres as they have a wealth of information to give you. It is also an excellent way to find out about opportunities you may not know about.
Also, start looking for jobs over the summer before you start 3rd year. It goes so quickly that spending time looking for jobs becomes very stressful.
What I do
My main duty is to build and maintain relationships with universities in order to drive applications into the company, raise brand awareness and support careers services. The area that I am currently responsible for is Ireland and Northern Ireland. My days are incredibly different and there is no such thing as a normal day. Most weeks I am involved in running the Assessment Centres which involves assessing graduates through group exercises, interviews and technical reviews. I also travel the country to go to universities to attend careers fairs and give presentations, either on the company or on soft skills. I do phone interviews and CV screenings on a regular basis as well.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Degree skills:
Balancing multiple things at once has been helpful.
Extracurricular skills:
I was able to build my confidence and team building skills.
What I like most
I enjoy the variation and being able to work with people.
What I like least
Sometimes there are long train journey's in order to get to universities.
