A day in the life of a Staff Nurse in the United Kingdom
My career history
I worked initially on an Elderly medical ward in York Hospital and then a year and a half after graduating I moved back to London. Here I got a job in the Emergency Department at St George's Hospital. I have been working towards my Degree through the St George's medical school. I have also completed a Diploma in childrens nursing which I now use by working in the childrens Emergency Department as well as the general Emergency Department.
Courses taken since graduation
Acutely Unwell Adult level 6, Emergency Practice Level 6, Initial assesment and management of the polytrauma patient level 6, Diploma of higher education in childrens nursing
Where I hope to be in 5 years
I hope to work in the tropics and in areas after natural disaster has struck to assist the communities to get back their previous level of independence.
What I do
The department is divided into several areas: Resuscitation, majors, minors and paediatrics. There is an Observation ward attached, which we staff for patients needing less than 24 hours observation or care.
Skills I use and how I developed them
I have a Diploma in Adult Nursing.
Degree skills:
All the skills I learned during my course are skills I have needed throughout my career so far.
What I like most
I enjoy the variety of patients and conditions. There is not a day when I don't learn something.
What I like least
The thing I like least is the frequent change over of doctors on our staff.
What would I change? I wouldn't change anything.
