A day in the life of a Age Friendly Communities Project Support Officer in the United Kingdom
My career history
After leaving York I chose to develop my skills and experience in the cultural sector through an MA in Heritage Management at Newcastle University. I graduated from this in 2009 and initially struggled to get work. During 2010 I had 6 different jobs in administration and as an invigilator. One of my jobs was as a part time admin assistant at Newcastle Council and I impressed at this enough to be promoted to senior level. With this experience, as well as experience I had gathered from all my roles, I got a job this year working on a project around improving intergenerational practise in Conwy, Wales. This is much closer to an interest I have developed in project management and I hope it will allow me into this sector, and perhaps back towards culture as well.

Where I hope to be in 5 years
I wish to become a project manager and also to move into the cultural sector.
My advice to students considering work
Think outside the box about all the things you're interested in and could do as well as all the experience and knowledge you've gained. You never know where your career will go... but that's good!
What I do
The work is mostly project management. Project management involves arranging meetings, discussion and making decisions on a whole range of issues that comes from working on a diverse range of projects. For example you could meet with an artist about running an art project. They will then go off and run the project and you have to monitor it and evaluate the outcomes. You need to have good research, decision making and analytical skills - a lot of which fitted with the skills I developed from my History degree.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Experience with projects gained during my MA. My degree also was important as well as my administrative experience gained after graduation.
Degree skills:
Research, analytical and decision making skills were all important.
Extracurricular skills:
I had skills in project management and administration. The former was developed both in work and in a work placement and the later in paid employment in administration.
What I like most
I enjoy the freedom and variety of different things I can get involved with.
What I like least
There can sometimes not be much going on if you are waiting for a key meeting.
What would I change? I would like to work in the cultural sector.
