A day in the life of a Asset Strategy Planner in the United Kingdom
My career history
I spent two years on the Yorkshire Water Graduate Development Programme which involved moving around the business completing thre month placements in various teams. I went from working on a sewage works, to project managing capital delivery schemes with our contract partners. I applied for a substantive role in June 2010. Since then my role has been to build our network strategy and plan for the future: how will our water and waste water networks function in 10, 20, 30 years time?
Where I hope to be in 5 years
I hope to be managing a team within a couple of years. Ultimately I would like to run my own business in the future.
My advice to students considering work
Just go for it.
What I do
My day to day role involves data analysis, project managing a number of different pieces of work to develop our 5-year business plan and working with the rest of my team to form a vision for our network into the future.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Degree skills:
My IT and presentation skills have been a big help.
Extracurricular skills:
Communication and assertiveness have been important skills.
What I like most
I enjoy the fact that my role is very varied and no two days are the same.
What I like least
What would I change? I wouldn't change anything.
