A day in the life of a Production Co-ordinator in the United Kingdom
My career history
I began my career with a paid internship for a small African development organisation based in Oxford. Initially I worked on fundraising, but during the course of the year I became more involved in programme and communications work, including PA support to the Director. This was an excellent opportunity to learn about the sector from the inside, and my 18 months experience there laid the foundations for future roles with development organisations. After a short spell volunteering with a new education charity in Uganda, I returned to the UK to begin work in UNICEF's publications team.
Where I hope to be in 5 years
I hope to use the skills and knowledge that I have acquired to manage the production of publications which will have a positive impact on African development.
My advice to students considering work
Make the most of the support offered by the careers service, and aim high!
What I do
As Production Co-ordinator for UNICEF UK I am responsible for overseeing the planning, editing and design of the organisation's publications and publicity materials. I work in a small team (three people), where my role is mainly focussed on liaising with other teams who require our support to produce or update printed resources. I also manage relationships with printing companies, as well as being responsible for various administrative duties.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Degree skills:
The language skills I learnt have been indispensable.
Extracurricular skills:
During my time at York and as a graduate I took on several voluntary positions of responsiblity with a student-run African volunteering organisation. Through this experience I developed my project management and communications skills, as well as gaining a good understanding of the sector.
What I like most
I like the fast-paced environment and the fact that events in the outside world have an impact on my day-to-day work. I also like being able to help other people to meet their objectives.
What I like least
I don't like the fact that so much of my work is dependent on other people, and I sometimes find it hard to juggle conflicting priorities.
What would I change? I would go back three years and tell my graduate self not to worry, that everything would work out just fine!
