A day in the life of a Development Assistant Producer in the United Kingdom
My career history
Runner Input Media - Sports television including UEFA Champions League Football, IPL Cricket, Davis Cup Tennis and PGA Golf - London - Oct 2008-Feb 2009; Work experience, BBC Wales - Feb - Mar 2009; Development Researcher - Channel 4/Green Bay Media, Cardiff, May 2009 - March 2011
My advice to students considering work
Make as many contacts as you can while you are still at University. And persevere - keep trying to do what you want and don't get sidetracked by easy money!
What I do
My job involves coming up with new television programmes for all of the BBC channels, concentrating mainly on Features (lifestyle - food/travel etc), Daytime and BBC Three.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Degree skills:
The writing skills I developed over the three years have been invaluable.
Extracurricular skills:
The ability to get on with everyone is essential - you never know who will remember you in the future and offer you a job!
Self shooting camera skills have also been useful - I had BBC training on the Z1 but also learned how to use the PD150 through the Filmmaking Club at York.
What I like most
From one programme to the next it's always a different and exciting challenge. It's a very creative job - I'm constantly on the lookout for stories or ideas that could be turned into television programmes. It also lets me use my writing and story development skills.
