A day in the life of a Teacher of Music in the United Kingdom
My career history
After completing my teachers' training at Durham University, I worked as a voluntary and supply teacher in different schools in Norfolk before securing a temporary position at an independent school for girls in Surrey. With the new experiences I gained at this job, I secured a permanent position at Spalding Grammar School in Norfolk for boys where I currently work.
Courses taken since graduation
PGCE Secondary Music and MA Education at Durham University
Where I hope to be in 5 years
In a couple of years time I will be looking for a Director of Music Head of Department post, and further on I am looking to keep my options open. I would not mind becoming a Deputy Headteacher in the end, or going into something different from teaching.
My advice to students considering work
Make sure if you would like to do a PGCE course, apply to GTTR early, spend time doing your personal statement properly so that you have the highest chances of being offered a place as competition is a lot higher than first degree courses.
I used to advise to plan out your future rigorously so that you know what you need to do to achieve what you would like. However, in recent times I would still advise this to some extent, but don't be afraid to explore alternative options and keep an open mind. You might miss out on something you would not expect be suited for you.
What I do
Teaching Key Stage 3, GCSE and A-Level Music to boys. Extra-curricular activities: Three vocal groups, Chamber Choir, and Concert Band. Vertical Form Tutor to Year 7 to 13 students.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Qualifications:
PGCE Secondary Music (Durham); BA Music (York); A grade in A-level Music
Grade 8 Piano Practical (ABRSM)
Experience: Working at St Catherine's School, Bramley, Guildford.
Voluntary work experience at Litcham Primary School, Litcham High School, Great Massingham Church School, Reepham High School and College. Supply teaching in various Norfolk schools all subjects.
Degree skills:
Singing in the University Choir has helped me with private tuition to teach singing to my students. Most surprisingly, writing a 5,000 word essay each term improved my English skills so I was able to communicate more clearly and precisely.
Extracurricular skills:
Performing gigs, composing for my own pleasure.
What I like most
I enjoy the actual teaching of the students and performing in concerts with them.
What I like least
It is easy to work too hard, get stressed and not have any time to myself.
What would I change? I have changed my work-life balance by changing my priorities. Work used to be the most important thing in my life, but now I put my well-being, friends and family first.
