My advice to students considering work
Use the careers service before leaving, don't let your future employment be an afterthought. Try to arrange some work experience relevant to your career whilst studying, it shows that you are keen and will look good on your CV!
What I do
I am a Police Constable on the Neighbourhood Support Team based at York. The team I work on is a force resource so we are deployed to all parts of the county of North Yorkshire if required. Our specialisms are search (executing warrants, counter terrorism searches and missing person searches) public order (the ability to deal with large scale disorder or 'riots') and proactive plain clothes work. I work in a team of 7 Constables and 1 Sgt. We are involved in many of the major enquiries in the force in some capacity so the work is interesting and varied.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Degree skills:
My degree helped to develop my ability to research, interrogate computer systems and documentation.
Extracurricular skills:
The developed the ability to integrate and communicate with people from different walks of life. I developed self confidence from independant living.
What I like most
I enjoy most aspects of my job, I particularily enjoy executing drugs warrants and the opportunity to take the drugs and their dealers off the streets.
What I like least
I don't enjoy the unsociable hours.
