A day in the life of a Software Developer in the United Kingdom
My career history
I work with C# writing user interfaces to server-side software used for analysis of financial data. I use .NET technologies and work with webservices. I work in London.
Courses taken since graduation
UCL - MSc Computer Science
My advice to students considering work
Your degree probably isn't exactly what you're going to be doing at work. There is virtually no practical (and economic) use of the ability to solve differential equations, for instance, or whatever it is you think is the essence of your degree. What is useful and valuable is the ability to apply thought processes to other problems. There may be little application of the concrete knowledge gained at university but there are a wealth of opportunities to apply whatever it was that you enjoyed to something else.
My advice about working in my industry
Developing the ability to become good at programming is great, but it's also good to know how to program. This can be achieved by working on programmning conscientiously in your own time.
What I do
I am responsible for all client-side user interface technology at my firm. This involves developing software, providing consultancy services to clients on how to develop user interfaces for our product, and supporting existing applications.
What I like most
I enjoy the fact that I have a lot of responsibility and find programming fascinating.
What I like least
The hours are sometimes long.
