A day in the life of a Acting Manager in the United Kingdom

How I found out about the job

City of York Council

Courses taken since graduation

OCN Level 4 working with familiesa with multiple and complex needs

Where I hope to be in 5 years

My plans for the future are to continue where I am, and perhaps move into Youth Justice.

My advice to students considering work

My advice is to get in touch with the employer and ask if possible if you can visit the work place and meet the staff. Find out about the possibilities of shadowing for a day. It is also important to do your homework on the company and be up to date with new and current legislation.

My advice about working in my industry

Social Care and Health Care will change radically within the next 3 years, be open minded as there may be more opportunities in the private/non-statutory sectors.

What I do

I am managing a team of 7 keyworkers who deliver intensive family support for those families identified with issues relating to crime, anti-social behaviour, non/poor-attendance of education, mental health issues, unemployment, debts, housing problems, child protection plans etc.

Skills I use and how I developed them

I had to have a Social Work degree to apply for the position. All skills learnt were applicable.

Extracurricular skills:
Negotiation and mediation skills, learnt whilst a trades union offical.

What I like most

I enjoyed the variety and working relationships with children, parents and extended families.

What I like least

Stress!

What would I change? I would have studied to be a Social Worker much earlier in my life. I sometimes found it difficult at university being a mature student.
