A day in the life of a Software Engineer in the United Kingdom
My career history
I worked in a startup in Cambridge for 6 months, worked as a volunteer for an NGO in India for 4 months, then started my current job.
My advice to students considering work
Distill your CV down to what your employers really care about, then go and talk to as many people as you can about what you might want to do.
My advice about working in my industry
Keep your finger on the pulse, get involved in open source projects, build some apps. Just keep playing with things.
What I do
Despite the run-of-the-mill job title, the things I'm involved in day-to-day can vary wildly. The problems I have to think about cover some combination of software architecture, machine learning, user interaction, algorithms, software testing, large-scale data processing, integrations, a variety of programming languages, where to have lunch and more.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Degree skills:
You've got to learn your algorithms & data structures, kids.
What I like most
I joined SwiftKey around 18 months ago, frankly, not knowing what I'd let myself in for. At the time there were around 10 people working there, but now there are 40. I'd worked at a startup for a few months just after graduating and knew I liked the relaxed atmosphere and the autonomy of the work. It was like working in an academic department, but faster and more exciting. The work I do every day is rewarding, exciting interesting and I'm learning something new. Even better - I get to work with great, smart people.
What I like least
Uncertainty, but that's what makes it interesting.
