A day in the life of a Barrister in the United Kingdom
My career history
I undertook pupillage at 6 Pump Court Chambers and was subsequently taken on as a tenant.
Courses taken since graduation
MA Legal & Political Theory at UCL, GDL at City University, BVC at BPP College of Law
Where I hope to be in 5 years
I would like to remain at the Bar for many years, hopefully become a QC and maybe go onto the bench.
My advice to students considering work
Start thinking about what you want to do early. Going into the law think about how you will pay for the training as it is expensive. I was lucky enough to get scholarships from Gray's Inn.
What I do
I am a barrister in a common law chambers. I am in court on a regular basis (approx 3 days a week) and the rest of the time I work in chambers preparing for cases or assisting other barristers on large pieces of litigation.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Getting a First class degree was helpful.
Degree skills:
Ability to research and show strong analytical abilities will impress interview panels.
Extracurricular skills:
I undertook a number of pro bono activities including representing people in the employment tribunal and going to Jamaica to work on cases for people who are on death row. This shows commitment to the law.
What I like most
I enjoy being an advocate and being self-employed.
What I like least
No monthly salary, no safety net, incredibly competitive to get in and to succeed, unpredictable hours.
What would I change? I probably should have spent a few years working in another area and then gone to the Bar rather than going straight into the Bar after university.
