A day in the life of a Publishing Director in the United Kingdom
My career history
I began proofreading for Bradt during the final writing-up year of my PhD, and was offered the in-house position of Editorial Assistant when that came vacant. During the following years I twice left to pursue other jobs, but returned to Bradt each time and have risen through the ranks to my current role. Alongside my 'day job', I am also a freelance travel writer and broadcaster, writing for publications like the Independent on Sunday and Wanderlust, and having a regular travel slot on BBC Radio 5 Live.
What I do
My current job is to formulate and oversee the publishing strategy for Bradt Travel Guides, the last leading independent guidebook company. I am ultimately responsible for the process and workings of the Editorial Department, and for guiding and approving the list of books we publish. I'm also one of four company directors that determine overall company direction at board level.
Skills I use and how I developed them
A degree-level qualification is vital for a publishing career. I've found the writing skills gained through my English degree, and in particular my PhD, a great help both for communicating generally and for my freelance writing career specifically.
