My career history
I graduated in July 2012 and began working as an Assistant Director for Explore Learning in October 2012.
My advice to students considering work
I would advise utilising the fantastic opportunities there are in York and volunteering as much as possible, both at the University and in the city itself. Experiences I had on the JCRC, when participating in YSIS and when volunteering at a local charity were vital during the recruitment process. Getting ahead and looking at examples of application forms are a great way to find out what employers are expecting of you and what you will need to be able write about when you start applying, so it's a good indicator of areas where you need more experience.
What I do
Explore Learning is a tuition centre for 5-14 year olds. The assistant director role is very varied, and is a fantastic opportunity to get lots of responsibility very early on. As an assistant director, I am actively involved in teaching: both in the centre with our members and in local schools where we frequently visit to do workshops and assemblies. I also play an active role in managing the centre, ensuring targets are met as part of a team, problem solving, training and developing the tutor team and ensuring fantastic customer service to our members. The position also includes sales and marketing, promoting the centre through face to face communications, advertising and building a fantastic reputation within the community.
Skills I use and how I developed them
I think my degree in Psychology had a massive impact on getting my current job. The degree itself encouraged me to develop many transferable skills including written communication and presentation sklls, effective researching and independent learning.
What I like most
I love working within the management team towards reaching our targets and having lots of opportunity to try out our own ideas to do so.
