A day in the life of a Research Fellow in the United Kingdom

How I found out about the job

jobs.ac.uk

The recruitment process

The process was smooth - there were two levels of interviews and I then received notification of my successful application. I was quite lucky as I got a place from threee different places at the same time - accepted this position as I have more interest in research.

My career history

I am based at Cranfield in the Department of Integrated Systems.

Courses taken since graduation

Scientific Technical Writing, HALCON11 3D Techniques

Where I hope to be in 5 years

I am doing a PhD at the moment and am hoping to have career progression in research. I would like to see myself chair in 10-15 years time.

My advice to students considering work

Work hard in your studies as this is the only thing which can help you after getting the job. Market yourself and tailor your application and interview answers according to the need of employer. Prepare yourself well before interviews and be SMART during interviews.

What I do

I have finished as Flexa Cell Coordinator which was an FP7 project in 2012. Now I am working towards my PhD and also working on three other projects in the lab. My main work in to automate robots, processes and Network Based Control Systems. My application area is industrial robots and manufacturing. At Cranfield we have collaboration with Airbus, EPSRC, Rolls Royce, Volvo, etc.

Skills I use and how I developed them

Qualification and my grades had an impact on getting all the offers. I obtained this job because of my previous experience prior studying an MSc at York but the degree was an added advantage. The skills gained from my MSc are very valuable - like documentation, human computer interaction, design, analysis, and the final project which let you think in an intuitive way.

Extracurricular skills:
My previous MSc in Computer Science in which I developed skills in Artificial Intelligence really helped to get this job. I also worked in an institution before studying in York for 4 years and the work I did was based on networks and software engineering that really helped me to pass the stages with ease.

What I like most

I enjoy the research and insight into the industry. It's my dream job so I like each aspect about it.
